A spade can be seen as the most personal piece of gardening equipment. With the forged blade of the spade, you can cut through roots, dig a hole, and turn over your vegetable garden. With a garden fork, you work the soil more gently, for example when loosening and refreshing the soil, lifting old roots to the surface, and preparing borders for a new gardening season. Where a spade can disturb the soil structure through cutting and digging, a garden fork preserves more of the existing soil life and avoids unnecessary disruption. When using a garden fork, keep the handle as upright as possible and avoid excessive levering, as this may result in a broken handle.
